Baseball roundup: Huntington Beach loses; Orange Lutheran sweeps JSerra

Huntington Beach’s baseball team suffered just its second loss of the season Friday in the semifinals of the National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C.

The Oilers (14-2) lost 3-2 to Trinity Christian Academy of Florida, their first loss since falling to La Mirada in the Boras Classic on March 26.

Oregon State signee Tyler Bellerose allowed just one earned run in 6⅔ innings. Trent Grindlinger and Ethan Porter each had doubles and a RBI.

Huntington Beach was set to play fellow Southern Section team Corona in a consolation game Saturday, but the two teams opted to not play each other. The Oilers will play Edwardsville of Indiana Saturday before returning home to begin a three-game series against Los Alamitos.

In the Trinity League:

Orange Lutheran 6, JSerra 0: Orange Lutheran completed a three-game sweep of JSerra with a combined shutout from Sam Principe and Caden Miller.

The Lancers (14-4, 3-3) swept JSerra for the first time since 2019.

Principe allowed just two hits in 5⅓ innings to earn the win. Neither pitcher for the Lancers recorded a strikeout but combined to allow just three hits.

Texas A&M signee Josiah Hartshorn had a double and one RBI and so did Noah Haros.

Otto Graham had seven strikeouts in four one-hit innings for JSerra (7-9, 2-4). Braydon Boop and Shane D’Arcy each hit doubles.

In the Crestview League:

Villa Park 5, Cypress 3: Dominic Gutierrez hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning to lead Villa Park (14-5, 3-3) to a big win over Cypress.

Logan Hoppie got the win in relief for the Spartans with five strikeouts in four no-hit innings. Pepperdine signee Shawn Romero went 4 for 4 with two doubles and a RBI.

Tate Belfanti pitched four shutout innings for Cypress (12-9, 4-2) with six strikeouts. Connor Artasere went 2 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs.

El Dorado 6, Foothill 1: Jacob Alvarez allowed just one run in six innings with four strikeouts for El Dorado (16-5, 3-3).

Aiden McNaughton went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Golden Hawks. Brady Abner and Logan Steenburgen each went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Everett Rycroft and Aidan Colburn each had two hits for Foothill (15-6, 4-2).

In the Freeway League:

Pacifica 6, Canyon 4: Pacifica scored two runs in three consecutive innings in a home win over Canyon.

Jensen Kinkade pitched 2⅓ innings of scoreless relief to earn the win and had three strikeouts. Joshua Pearman had a double, stolen base and one RBI for Pacifica (6-14, 1-5) and Ryan Greenberg added two hits.

Jonathan Sandoval and Matt Fromenta each had three hits for Canyon (13-6, 5-1). Lorenzo Luevano had a single and one RBI.

Yorba Linda 10, Crean Lutheran 0: Troy Radomski and Drew Parmenter combined for a shutout for Yorba Linda (7-13, 1-3) despite allowing 11 baserunners.

Thomas Knutson went 2 for 2 with two stolen bases and three RBIs for the Mustangs. Nathan Schneider had two hits with one RBI and Joshua Garza drove in two runs.

In the Sea View League:

Mission Viejo 8, El Toro 5: Jack Boucher had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for the Diablos in a win over El Toro.

Max Osika went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a stolen base for Mission Viejo (11-10, 3-3). Carson Browning had two hits with one RBI and Jacob Powley drove in a run.

Logan Merwin drove in two runs for El Toro (11-9, 5-4) and Jack Mckelvy went 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 2, Marina 0: Shane Timmons pitched a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts for Edison (11-10, 4-8).

Gavin Johnson had a double and one  RBI for the Chargers.

Tate Morris allowed no earned runs in five innings with just two hits allowed and eight strikeouts for Marina (9-10, 2-7). Jack Pollock had a double for the Vikings.

Corona del Mar 8, Los Alamitos 6: Corona del Mar snapped an eight-game losing streak with a road win over Los Alamitos.

Charlie Kaster had three hits with a stolen base and one RBI for Corona del Mar (8-12, 2-10). Dylan O’Kelly had a double with one RBI. Stevie Jones got the win on the mound and drove in two runs.

Nate Walker hit a home run for Los Alamitos (15-4-2, 8-4) and Tyler Smith drove in two runs.

In the Empire League:

Fullerton 10, Ocean View 5: Fullerton had 15 hits in a win over Ocean View.

Mason Park went 3 for 3 with a double, two stolen bases and one RBI for Fullerton (13-5-1, 3-0). Sammy Chacon went 4 for 4 with one RBI and Malachi Meni drove in two runs.

Luke Gordon had a double with two RBIs for Ocean View (9-11, 5-4) and Jackson Arredondo had two hits.

Laguna Hills 6, Calvary Chapel 4: Laguna Hills scored five runs in the fourth inning in a road win.

Kyler FitzPatrick had three hits for Laguna Hills (11-8, 3-4) and Nate Medina hit a double with one RBI. Michael Gould and Noe Garcia each drove in runs for the Hawks and the bullpen pitched three shutout innings.

Ben Steele had eight strikeouts in six innings for Calvary Chapel (8-12-1, 1-5-1). Brody Beck had two hits and Kaden Cox stole a base and drove in a run.

In the North Hills League:

Sonora 5, Sunny Hills 1: Caleb Orr pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts for Sonora.

Anthony Abad had a double, a triple, three stolen bases and one RBI for Sonora (11-6, 4-1). Tanner Hunnicut drove in two runs.

Andre Katayama pitched five innings for Sunny Hills (3-15, 1-5) and had two hits at the plate. Oliver Botch added a triple and scored a run.

Brea Olinda 4, Esperanza 0: Nicholas Rodriguez pitched a shutout with six hits and one strikeout for Brea Olinda.

Hayden Gonzales hit a double with a RBI and Hudson Sims had a triple and one RBI for Brea (11-6, 5-1).

In the Orange Coast League:

Garden Grove 2, Valencia 1: Garden Grove accomplished the rare feat of winning a game without getting a hit.

Rohan Ramos pitched a complete game for Garden Grove (12-6, 5-1) with two hits and nine strikeouts. Sebastian Vallejo drove in a run.

Dean Nielsen pitched six no-hit innings for Valencia (5-11, 2-5) with seven walks and three strikeouts.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Northwood 11, Portola 1: Northwood had four players have multi-hit and multi-RBI games in a rout of Portola.

Kai Tsuneshige and Ethan Tsou each had doubles and two RBIs. Paul Grossman had three hits with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs. Carter Liu pitched 4⅓ shutout innings with six strikeouts for Northwood (7-12-1, 3-4).

Eli Serrano had two hits with a RBI for Portola (7-11, 5-3).

Sage Hill 4, University 0: Jad Rigley pitched a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts for Sage Hill (5-7, 2-6).

Jared Stroner had a single and one RBI and Oliver Cheng drove in two runs.

In the Golden West League:

Kennedy 4, Katella 1: Anthony Hernandez pitched a complete game with four strikeouts for Kennedy.

Hernandez also went 1 for 3 with a stolen base and a run. Jonathan Arreola went 2 for 4 and scored a run and Travis Bergmann had one RBI for Kennedy (12-9, 3-3).

Hector Perez hit a solo home run for Katella (13-4, 2-2).

In the Grove League:

Loara 15, Rancho Alamitos 8: Traivon Nicholson had 11 strikeouts in five innings for Loara and had a big game offensively.

Nicholson went 3 for 4 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Robert Webster went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for Loara (11-2, 8-0). Carter Smith hit two doubles with two RBIs.

Matthew Arguelles went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs for Rancho Alamitos (7-8, 2-6) and Carson Labossiere went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs.

In the San Joaquin League:

Avalon 15, Fairmont Prep 11: Fairmont Prep had 15 stolen bases in a high-scoring loss to Avalon.

Brandon Kim went 2 for 2 with two doubles and four stolen bases for Fairmont Prep (0-3, 0-3). Ryan Lee had two hits with three stolen bases and Ethan Li had a double, a stolen base and two RBIs.
